You're probably asking "what is a leaky gut?" Unfortunately, it's term that is relatively unknown however statistics show that it affects 80-90% of today's population! In a nutshell, it's a condition of the stomach lining where the intestinal wall become penetrable, allowing germs, toxins and food particles to pass through, right into the bloodstream. This phenomenon can cause inflammation in the body, ranging in symptoms from abdominal cramps and bloating all the way to migraines and autoimmune disorders. The severity of symptoms depends upon the the extent of leakage and how the reactivity of the immune system.
Leaky gut syndrome can be caused from a variety of things including stress, antibiotics and other medications and especially, a poor diet! Consuming a poor diet contributes to the intestinal lining becoming faulty, leading to leaky gut syndrome.
If you are suffering from unexplained bloating, abdominal cramping, changes in bowel pattern, rashes, joint pain, fatigue, food sensitivities or autoimmune conditions, it may be time to have a conversation with your primary care provider to discuss testing for leaky gut.
In the meanwhile, clean up your diet!! Consume foods that are nourishing to your body like fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, nuts and seeds. Your gut lining will thank you for it!
